These Are the Most Popular Dog Names in America Right Now

Choosing a name for your furry friend is a tough decision. There are a few things to consider, from the breed and its personality to how the name will sound when you’re shouting it across the park. But what are the most popular dog names in the U.S. in 2022?

A new study conducted by OnePoll on behalf of PupBox has taken a look at the top dog names for 2022 and just how Americans come up with them, whether it’s pop culture influence or scouring the web for advice.

36% of the 2,000+ respondents revealed that they have chosen to give their four-legged friend a human name like “Jessica” and “Kevin”. 32% opted for traditional doggy names such as “Fido” and “Fluffy” while 28% decided to take inspiration from their favorite foods, including “Meatball” and “Biscuit”.

When naming their pet, 37% chose pop culture icons or fictional character names, and 33% named their pets after historical figures.

The study also found that 85% of dog owners give their pups one or more nicknames, and  two-thirds of those claim that they use their pet’s nickname so often that they’ve forgotten its actual name.

“Selecting a name for your new puppy can be a lot of fun, but you’ll want a name that you love saying and hearing since you’ll be calling your pup a lot the first year,” said Ariel Zvaifler, co-founder of PupBox. “You’ll want to consider length of name, how many syllables, and if it sounds like other words that could confuse your pup.”

Additionally, 6 in ten of the survey respondents said that the hardest thing about training their dog was teaching them its name, taking two weeks or more to respond to its given name.

“Bringing a new addition into the home is extremely exciting, but the thought of training a new puppy can also be a bit overwhelming. Some key tips for your new training journey include rewarding good behavior, being consistent and doing lots of reps with your pup,” continued Zvaifler. “Keep training sessions short and fun, filled with treats, pets, and words of encouragement!
