An Incredible Woman to Know

I decided to do some reading during black history month. There are so many things that I didn’t know that were discovered by black women. Today, I wanted to share some information about Maggie Lena Walker. Maggie was the daughter of a former slave. According to the National Park Service, Maggie became a teacher and established a newspaper called The St. Luke Herald. After, she founded the St. Luke Penny Savings bank in 1903. Her goal was to improve the livelihoods of the black community. Maggie broke gender and racial norms by becoming the first black woman to be a president of a bank. Maggie served as board chairwoman when the bank merged with two other Richmond banks. In 1925, Maggie received an honorary master’s degree from Virginia Union University. And was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 2001.
