Kitchen of the Week: An Efficient Cook Space in a Quiet Corner of Paris

A month ago, Margot profiled an uncommonly stylish starter apartment in Paris (see The Ultimate First Apartment: A Brother and Sister’s Shared Quarters). The redone flat on a quiet cul-de-sac in the 11th arrondissement is the work of designer Marianne Evennou, who again wielded her trademark way with color and use of interior windows for bringing in the Paris light.
Today we’re taking a closer look at the efficient shades-of-blue kitchen, with elements of the late-19th-century building still intact.

Above: The 90-square-meter (968-square feet) apartment is on the ground floor. The main entrance (not quite visible on the wall opposite the partition) opens into a small hallway and the kitchen and living area beyond. The palette throughout is blue on blue, including the floor, which is concrete with a wax finish. Above: The petite kitchen is all new with a few preserved elements (the rough-hewn beams, for example). The narrow fridge is by Smeg, and the range hood is cleverly hidden behind a panel of dappled glass. Above: Evennou often adds interior windows in lieu of solid walls to connect spaces and carry through natural light. This one is steel-framed and offers a view, while washing dishes, through the partition and the front door to the courtyard. Above: The cabinets are custom, painted in Cumulus Lourd from Ressource Paints (see A Storied French Company Crosses the Atlantic), and the counters are Zimbabwean black granite. Evennou made the dining table herself with a plank from Atmosphère d’Ailleurs atop readymade steel table legs. In addition to the cool blue palette, there’s a material mix: glossy counters, an assemblage of wooden dining chairs and perches, natural-fiber pendants and baskets, and a woven rug. Above: A trio of Solo Pendant Lights by Atelier Vime illuminate the workspace. The bespoke shelves, including a built-in plate rack, add to the small kitchen’s efficiency.
