Living in a pandemic has brought so many abrupt changes to our lifestyles — chief among them is spending more time at home. For me, the silver lining has been realizing just how much of my furniture wasn’t really up to par. Yes, including my mattress.

According to the Mayo Clinic most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night. As life in quarantine carries on, I’ve been granted the inherent luxury of not only sleeping more but also getting much of my work done from my bed. This quickly led to the realization that my super plush pillow top mattress wasn’t really cutting it. Clearly, I was overdue for a new mattress; one on the firmer side that would soothe the aches and pains I thought were caused by “sleeping in weird positions.” But I also knew from years of research as a lifestyle editor that the kind of mattress worthy of investing in would run me a couple of thousand dollars. Financially, I just wasn’t ready for that type of major purchase yet. So, I opted for the next best thing: a mattress topper.

After combing through some of the most highly reviewed and rated mattress toppers on the ‘net, Tempur-Pedic’s TEMPUR-Topper Supreme came out on top as one of the most preferred sleep products out there. Customers raved about the backaches that disappeared since sleeping on this three-inch-thick memory foam topper, and how it essentially created the experience of having a brand-new mattress. At $399, the price point was a bit higher than some of the other mattress toppers I’d seen, but after considering my mom’s age-old “you get what you pay for” philosophy, I decided to take the plunge in the name of better sleep. And it was worth every penny (and then some!)

The TEMPUR-Topper Supreme comes in a box that, upon arrival, is a bit on the heavy side. With the help of my sister, I got the box up to my bedroom, where we unrolled the topper onto the mattress and gave it a few hours to rise. And then, the moment of truth — laying on the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme for the first time. After sprawling out on my bed with the added topper, sleep took on a whole new meaning. The initial feeling of firmness was eventually followed by a blissful submersion into peaceful rest. I’d actually forgotten how it felt to be nestled comfortably and fully supported in a bed, rather than plopping into the middle of a sinking mattress. “Yes!” I blurted out as a knee-jerk reaction to the newfound feeling of laying on a suitable surface.

My first week of sleeping on the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme only surpassed my initial reaction. Each night, I noticed a better quality of sleep and generally felt more rested. The most standout difference was being able to fall asleep faster. The excessive tossing and turning to find the perfect position was no more, since the memory foam gently and gradually conformed to my natural sleep position. Settling into bed is now pleasant, unlike what I’ve experienced with other memory foam products that gave me the “quicksand” feeling.

So far, the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme has turned out to be my favorite quarantine purchase. It’s not only bought me more time with my current mattress but is also giving me some of the best sleep of my life. It’s much less interrupted, and my neck, shoulders, and spine are way less tense in the mornings.

If you’re in the market for a sleep makeover but don’t want to take the plunge on a brand-new mattress, the TEMPUR-Topper Supreme might be for you. And here’s the good news: It’s on sale for $239.40 (normally $399) during Tempur-Pedic’s limited-time Sleep Week sale, which runs through Monday. Better not sleep on this deal!

Buy: TEMPUR-Topper Supreme, Queen Size, $239.40 (normally $399)
