A Nautical Fabric and Wallpaper Collection from Zak + Fox

Zak Profera of NYC artisanal textile house Zak + Fox is a designer who finds inspiration by traveling far and wide in place and time. And, it turns out, by going deep: he just introduced Sea Change, a 19-piece, nautically themed collection that was four years in the making.
Zak describes his new fabric and wallpaper as “a Gothic retelling of old maritime tales and folk traditions.” Count us among the enchanted.

Above: Zak did research in the archives at The Mystic Seaport Museum, a re-created 19th century village in Mystic, Connecticut, and returned to capture the designs there. Cintamani, a wool velvet, is shown here on Jamb of London’s Regency-style Hanbury Sofa. All of the new designs are available in several colorways. Above: Cassiopea is a 100-percent linen patterned with waves and cassiopea, “a jellyfish that spends most of its life floating upside down near the ocean floor,” writes Zak. The chair is Italian circa 1960.
The Mystic Seaport Museum is spread across an 18-acre campus, and Zak was granted access to all of it for the Sea Change shoots.
Above: Mariner, a patchwork-patterned linen, tells “the story of the lone seafarer who mends his weather-worn sails with no more than a whalebone needle.” The collection is available from Zak + Fox and its 16 official agents, including George Spencer Designs in London and Holly Hunt in Chicago, Miami, Washington D.C., Boston, and Minneapolis. Above: Alga wallpaper is “a nostalgic vision, of simple fronds and seaweeds fluttering in the shallow waters of tide pools.” Above: Atlantis is a maritime toile that Zak describes as “a fairytale of grand ships and statuary, of merfolk and creatures of the deep.” It’s photographed in a room with antique scuba gear; the weighted diver’s shoes were worn over leather boots. Above: Zak and his Shiba Inu sidekick (and company namesake), Fox: “he just turned 14 but is still as salty as ever.” The Zak + Fox showroom is at 346 Park Avenue South in New York, and open by appointment to the trade.
